CHALLENGE GRANT RECIPIENT: Nuestra Avenida: Cesar Chavez Reimagined
In the heart of Boyle Heights, Cesar Chavez Boulevard is a heavily trafficked corridor. Nuestra Avenida brought together residents, business owners, and patrons to envision the future of their streets, especially around the issue of transportation and public safety. Hosted by Multicultural Communities for Mobility (MCM), From Lot to Spot, and CALO YouthBuild, the event included charettes for community members to brainstorm new designs for transportation infrastructure to ensure the safety of pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists alike. In addition, event organizers hosted a block party featuring live music, booths with community resources, street furniture, and temporary parklets. Nuestra Avenida also provided an opportunity for community outreach regarding temporary bike lanes and curb extensions designed to increase transit safety. Community members could walk the corridor, enjoy a renewed sense of place, and envision a stronger and safer neighborhood.
